With the upcoming release of the XLS-20 protocol, we at onXRP believe it important to keep the existing and new-coming communities up to date. As such, we would like to take the time to discuss the implications of this new technology and how you can get involved as quickly and efficiently as possible.
For the newcomers out there or the people that simply need a refresher, XLS-20 is one of the XRPL’s most highly anticipated amendments that will enable NFT technology on the ledger. It has been over a year since the amendment was proposed in May of 2021, and XRPL-native projects eagerly await its release.
Although the vote to push this new technology to MainNet has gone through once before, back in September 2022, unfortunate circumstances led to its postponement. It was not until the bug discovery was resolved that a new version of the amendment was proposed. Since the new proposal, the code has been tested rigorously and subsequently approved by the dUNL validators, that have since voted to push the protocol forward onto the XRPL’s MainNet. If all goes according to plan, the protocol will go live on October 31st, 2022, at 8:41:41 PM UTC.
With the introduction and implementation of this new technology, NFT projects on the XRPL will finally be able to release their series through a plethora of XLS-20-compatible NFT marketplaces. Many such projects will do so through the onXRP platform, and we cannot wait to see their collections traded on our marketplace and across the XRPL. Moving forward, we at onXRP hope to host many more projects and artists on our platform.
Unlike other blockchains, where collectors and traders use the network’s native coins to mint NFTs after being whitelisted (e.g. Ethereum Network = Ethers), the XRPL has introduced an extra dimension through the introduction of tokenised whitelisting. Tokenised whitelisting can be seen as a way to claim the right to mint an NFT once the XLS-20 protocol goes live and, subsequently, the projects can mint. Tokenised whitelisting was a way to circumvent the waiting process and allowed projects to sell their digital IOU vouchers to build and develop their projects and communities
The number of digital IOU vouchers required per NFT depends on the total token supply relative to the NFT collection size of the project in question. For example, since the XPUNK series consists of both 10,000 NFTs and 5,000 XPUNK tokens, each 0.5 $XPUNK token will grant you the right to mint 1 XPUNK once XLS-20 is available on the MainNet. 1 $JUNK or 1 $CLUB token, will grant you the right to mint 1 Junkie or 1 Bull, respectively.
This interesting dynamic between tokens and NFTs means the community will face an environment where digital IOU vouchers and NFT floor prices will coexist, which has never happened before on any other blockchain.
