Distributed Ledger Technology
Distributed Ledger Technology (or DLT for short) is merely a protocol that enables peer-to-peer networks to access and use a digital database in a decentralised manner. Using a predicated consensus algorithm, the distributed ledger replicates, shares, and, synchronizes this digital data throughout the network which can span across the globe.
Although blockchain networks can be ways of implementing DLT, not every DLT protocol is blockchain-oriented. Blockchain can be seen as a type of DLT whereas DLT can be any type of decentralised data access & use management protocol. Since there is a consensus algorithm in place with active network participants and no intermediary, there cannot be a central point of failure. This is one of the many advantages of DLT and peer-to-peer networks.
