Because storing a JPEG on a blockchain like Ethereum is impossible due to its file size, an NFT has metadata. This metadata is a workaround to avoid storing the image on the blockchain. The easiest way to describe metadata is to see it like a text file that contains information on the unique JPEG ID, the name of the image, a description and a link to where the image is hosted online.

The metadata can also contain other information, apart from a JPEG.

“In the metadata you will find information on the attributes in the NFT and also how rare they are.”

The metadata is a good way to not have to store an image on the blockchain itself; it also has its flaws. The person that mints the NFT will have to provide all the metadata information like a title and description. This information can not be altered after the fact that the link to the online storage location of the image could go dead if the image was removed.
